Starting from the Round Mountain trail head on Tooma Rd, this walk takes you into the Jagungal Wilderness area following wide signposted trails to Round Mountain Hut. The walk boasts some great views across the headwaters of the Tumut River to Mt. Jagungal and visits the iron Round Mountains Hut, originally built in the early 1930s and rebuilt after fire in the 1940s. An enjoyable walk (or mountain bike ride), the hut provides some great space to camp if you want to make it an overnight walk.

Covered in snow part of the year

Covered in snow part of the year
This walk leads through an extreme alpine environment and all walkers must be well prepared. During summer, be prepared for both very hot and cold weather, high winds, rain, snow, extreme UV levels and some sections of snow or ice on the ground. Before starting this walk, check advice with Snowy Region Visitor Information Centre (02) 6450 5600, the weather forecast and the snow conditions then change your plans as needed. These notes, grades and walking times have been written for use in the summer months only. Between May and the end of October, this walk is likely to be covered in snow/ice, visitors should be carrying and be prepared to use snowshoes or cross country skis. When there is a chance of significant snow on the ground, visitors will need particularly strong navigation and snowcraft skills - tracks and signage may not be visible. Between the long weekend in June and October, the Tooma (Khancoban to Cabramurra) Road is closed by the RTA, making access to this walk very difficult. For most visitors, it is best to consider this walk closed during the colder months.

(0km) Round Mountain Trail Head → Int of Round Mountain and Farm Ridge Trails

distance 1.4 km time 29 mins climb 51m descent -60m Hard track
From the 'Round Mountain Trail Head' car park[1] (about 18.5km south of Cabramurra Township on Tooma Rd), this walk heads away from Tooma Road, around the locked gate (bar)[2] and along the management trail. Just beyond the gate, this walk passes a large 'Welcome to Round Mountain' information sign[3], then passes a post which houses an intentions book[4]. The trail leads uphill and soon enters a forest of dead (and regenerating) snow gums[5]. As the trail dips a bit, it then bends right[6] and leads up over another rise, then down to another locked gate[7] marked with a 'Jagungal Wilderness' sign. Here the walk continues south around the gate heading downhill, towards the great views across the headwaters of the Tumut River to Mt. Jagungal[8] in the distance. The trail continues downhill[9] and after about 900m, the trail comes to a signposted three-way intersection[10] with 'Farm Ridge Trail'[11] (on your left) and a 'Round Mountain Trail' sign[12] (just beyond the intersection on the right).

(1km) Int of Round Mountain and Farm RIdge Trails → Round Mountain Hut

distance 470 m time 10 mins climb 0m descent -69m Hard track
Veer left: From the intersection, this walk heads east past the 'Farm Ridge Trail' sign[13], along the management trail leading downhill. The trail soon starts heading more steeply downhill and bends left[14]. In a few places, the trail heads particularly steeply down[15], whilst enjoying the occasional view to Mt Jagungal on your right. The trail soon begins flattening out as it heads around the side of Round Mountain Hut[16], coming to a large, mostly flat clearing[17], with the hut[18] (to your left) and toilet[19] (to your right).

Round Mountain Hut

Round Mountain Hut
Round Mountain Hut is a 7m x 4.2m hut made from corrugated iron. It was originally built in the early 1930s, then rebuilt after fire in the 1940s. There is a fireplace[20], a bench for food preparation[21], some rustic bunk beds[22][23], and a nearby toilet[24]. There is space for camping around the hut and a reliable creek nearby (treat before drinking). The flat open area in front of the hut also provides a great view across the valley to Mt Jagungal. Round Mountain Hut is maintained by a voluntary caretaker group under the Kosciuszko National Park Huts Conservation Strategy. More info.
